As many of you are aware, every year during HIS birthday (June 4th 2010) our foundation does a lot of charitable activities to the needy section of our society. This year too, we have identified couple of not-for-profit organizations who are doing great service to the humanity for many depriving human beings in this world…

Coming 13th June'10 (Sunday) we all have the golden opportunity to meet up with Shri.SPB and be part of a noble cause and celebrate his birthday…

Agenda for the day (13th June'10)

a. Blood Donation Camp – morning 9.30 onwards
b. Charity event for Prabhavati Jayaprakash Seva Kendra – 11.30 a.m. onwards
c. Charity event for Lakshmi Palliative Care center – 11.30 a.m.onwards

All the above events will happen at the following venue:

Brief description about the sequence of events

1. Blood Donation Camp: We are in touch with Lions Blood bank for conducting a camp at the above venue. Request all members present at the venue to make themselves available for this noble gesture. A drop of your blood can save a life at the need of the hour…

2. Prabhavati Jayaprakash Seva Kendra – A special school for Polio & hearing impaired students accommodating around 120 special children, ranging from primary to higher secondary students. This place is located on the GST Road, near Nandhivaram (Guduvanchery) . Since this is the school re-opening time, they are mainly looking for support in terms of stationeries like notebooks, papers and related stationery items. Also, they are looking for provisions and groceries to support the feeding of the inmates. We will be supporting all of their requirements and also will try to arrange a special lunch meal for the kids and the coordinators of this trust.

3. Lakshmi Palliative Care: This is a unit based out of Kilpauk, Chennai headed by Dr.Mallika for those patients who suffer from critical diseases like Cancer and help them with their medicinal requirements etc., We will be supporting this organization for them to procure the morphine medicines that help to relieve the patients from acute pain they go through because of these ailments. Couple of organizers from this organization will join us at the venue mentioned above to brief us about their activities and we will hand-over a cheque to them at this juncture.

4. As mentioned above, we are planning for lunch for the inmates of the school and our group members and will disburse for the day

SPB sir has graciously accepted to be present on this fine occasion for all the events, with a condition that he wants to see more volunteers for Blood donation!!! Last time when we had this initiative (couple of years ago), we had a very lukewarm response. Hence, this time, we should make sure we have many volunteers for this noble activity and make him and ourselves happy…

Overall budget requirement for these activities runs close to around Rs.75K and we seek support from noble hearts through donations to our foundation. Without your support, this wouldn't be possible. As it goes without saying, all donations to our foundation are exempt from Income-Tax under Sec-80G.

Dear friends,

I am happy to share with you that an amount of Rs 75000 has been donated to Indian Red Cross by SPB Fans Charitable Foundation for the flood relief activity in AP and a similar amount to The Red Cross, Karnataka.

On 31.10. 2009, four of our Hyderabad members of SPB Fans Charitable Foundation, i.e Chaitanya, Mangalampalli Vijay, Mrs Usha and myself have met Justice Lakshman Rao, State Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, AP State Branch, Hyderabad and handed over our donation cheque of Rs 75000 on behalf of SPB Fans Charitable Foundation. Justice Rao was extremely happy and appreciated our contribution and said that the money would be used genuinely for the flood relief activities. A letter of acknowledgement and reciept have been issued to us for the amount.

Justice Rao, went on to explain various activities of the IRC in AP and requested voluntary work for a couple of hours every week for participation in the social welfare causes being undertaken by IRC. He said if today's youth could spend even one hour per week for the society, we can build a better world.

He had personally enquired about the activities of the foundation and also about us individually. When we explained in details of our activities, he was very very appreciative of our Big Boss, Sri SPB and said that the fans of Sri SPB are doing a great job by helping the downtrodden and less privileged in the society thru charity work.

Having understood the interest, we made a call to Sri SPB and requested to speak to Justice Rao while we had donated the money. Justice Rao was very happy to speak to Sri SPB and expressed his deep appreciation and thankfulness for the donation and also for guiding the fans to the charity activities. He also wished Sri SPB a long life and great health. We also expressed with sincere thanks to Sri SPB for immediately obliging our request to speak to Justice Rao. It really made a lot of difference to the programme since Justice Rao had expressed his great happiness, having spoken to Sri SPB.

The meeting with Justice Rao has been coordinated by Sri Mohan Rao, Executive Secretary and Treasurer of IRC Hyderabad.

Four of us had a wonderful experience being a part of this noble gesture of SPB Fans Charitable Foundation for which we are thankful to Sri SPB and the managing committee members.

I sincerely thank our friends Chaitanya, Usha and Vijay M who have readily agreed to participate in the event and made it a real success.

Charity Event @ Bangalore - 22nd August 2009

Hi All

The Institution chosen was 'Indira Gandhi International Academy', which houses about 260 children studying from Standard 1 to PUC. These children are the wards of SriLankan refugees housed at various camps in India.

After shortlisting the list of requirements put forth by the school, we had supplied 130 Trunks [for the children to store their belongings], 10 desks with draws for teachers from standards 1 to 10. A Fridge, and a couple of Basket Ball Boards with Hoops and net.

Malarvannan, Prabhanjan & Arvind along with Toufeeq played a major role in scouting, bargaining and procuring the items. I think everyone will agree when I say, Malarvannan stood up and took the overall responsibility, Prabhanjan and Arvind Pitched in with great enthusiasm and they pulled it off really well. Kudos!!

Well, the school children had made a fabulous decoration - they had put up 'thoranam' right from the gate all the way up to the school, and made colourful designs with flowers, and a welcome message for our Guruji with different flowers - all in all a spellbinding decoration. Those who saw it would vouch for the beauty of the arrangement.

Our Guruji arrived at 7:30 AM sharp, got out of the car at the gate when he saw children lined up on both sides to welcome him, garland him etc. He was cordially welcomed by the founder Mr. Mohan, Ms. Lakshmi Gopinath - Founder Bright Society & a volunteer as well, and Ms. Chitra Rajasekhar.

Guruji was directly taken to the 'dining room' which had doubled up as the events rooms, where they had made a dias of sorts. After the welcome note by Ms. Lakshmi, the talent events started. It was truly impressive seeing the children perform so well. As Malar has already explained about this, let me skip a repeat.

Mr. Mohan welcomed our Guruji and spoke about their longing for their homeland, and made an impaasionate plea to Guruji to lend his voice to unite all Srilankan Tamils, as his voice was the one they all had grown up listening to.

Our Guruji, praised the children for all the effort, and mentioned that he too grew up listening to Radio Ceylon, which played not just Tamil songs, but also Hindi & other language songs. He spoke how language which is just a means of communication between people and that it should not end up becoming a barrier between them. He praised the school, teachers and Volunteers for all the effort they have put, and also the fact that a school for Sirlankan Tamils was setup in Karnataka. He spoke in a way to encourage Children in their lives ambitions.

His impromptu rendition of the song which Little Deepa wrote put us all on an emotional high. Many of our fans were seen feeling thrilled, and getting goose bumps [self included].

All Fans on their volition had sponsored the breakfast for the day on personal account - which was bread omlette, egg etc. The school authorities had graciously accepted our request to arrange for 'veg' breakfast for our Guruji. They had arranged a breakfast for all our fans, not just Guruji. Idli, vada, Pongal and Coffee. We all sat along with the children and had breakfast.

Then Guruji had a tete-a-tete with the fans. Prabhanjan gave Guruji his marriage invite. Prasad Babu informed that it was his marriage anniv, and Guruji promptly gave him a boquet... and then he left the venue at about 9:45 AM.

The event, in my humble opinion was a resounding success in all aspects.

In This Series, We Meet Unusual Groups. This Week, Spend Time With SPB’s Fans

He’s is one of the best playback singers in the country with more than 37,000 songs to his credit. He can add more life and style to a song than most singers in the industry. But those are not the only reasons why the SP Balasubramaniam fan club has grown in numbers over the years. It’s because of the man himself.

“We do not meet to just to discuss SPB’s songs and music. That is one part of it, but this club was formed because we want to imbibe SPB’s character in our lives, and absorb his good qualities,” says R Ashok, 33, an accountant with a software company, and member of the group. There are doctors, singers, software engineers, chemical engineers and more in this group.

Although the group was formed online in 2003, pretty soon the members started arranging for frequent meetings in the city. “We have evolved as a group. In the beginning, we just met and discussed his songs. But after a couple of years, we thought, why not learn from SPB. He is charitable and humble as a person. So we started going to orphanages and doing charitable work,” says Ashok.

Says S Seshadhri, 42, a software project manager and member of the group, “What drew me to this group is the fact that they do charitable work. It’s SPB’s character as much as his voice that makes me a fan. Even though he is so famous, he is the most down-to-earth celebrity I have seen, and does a lot of good work.”

On all “special” SPB days, like for instance his birthday, the group organises for members to meet and donate to a charity. Once a year, they also try to get the legendary singer to attend a meet. Then they have a meeting once in three months to discuss their charitable contributions. But apart from that, they meet on the second Saturday of every month between 3 pm and 6 pm at Natesan Park in T Nagar to talk about SPB, his songs, concerts, and events, and even share the technical details of a song or some little nugget of information they have just heard or read about him. “We also try and get tickets at a concession for members of the group,” says Ashok.

A CHARITY EVENT ORGANISED BY THE SPB FANS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ON 28TH DEC 2008

28th Dec 2008 would remain in the annals of the SPB FANS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION as a golden lettered day, for, on this day, a charity event was organized at a School for Deaf & Dumb at Chengalpet and Rs.1,00,000 was donated in the form of class room furniture, utensils and other utilities/amenities. This is the highest donation by the Foundation in a single event till date.

The event also showcased two great human beings.

What do you get, when two human beings, great in their own rights, come together - ONE, who has dedicated his entire life to the welfare of the Deaf & Dumb Children and the OTHER, Humanity personified, in spite of being one of the few best film singers in a commercial stream, where popularity, fame and money find an easy way to one’s head filling it up with unwanted ego?

“You get the ultimate feeling that great human beings exist in spite of extremities, un-spoilt by worldly and materialistic influences”

That is what had happened at the Jeevan Gnanodhaya School at Chengalpet for the Deaf & Dumb on 28.12.2008.

The First ONE was Mr.Devarajan, the Founder of the School & the other was none other than our dear SPB with all humility and humanness endowed in him.

It was indeed a sight to savour and take in the stream of humanness emanating from their hearts and their actions.

Which Singer can touch the heart of a dumb & deaf child if not our beloved SPB? His voice had not only captivated the fortunate ones like us, but has also touched the hearts of the less fortunate deaf & dumb ones. This was evident in the eyes of the children there, which were filled with awe and admiration, on seeing the legendary figure in flesh & blood, standing and admiring their efforts & growth and lauding them abundantly and with no restraints whatsoever. Maybe they saw in HIM a loving & passionate grandfather.

What more do you expect from a great human being, who landed at the Chennai Airport from Bangalore on the morning of 28th Dec 2008 and drove straight to the School in Chengalpet situated 45 kms away, rather than take the much preferred route of normal human beings to home. That shows what an exceptional character he is and in turn his commitment to the society that he lives in.

Well, one can dwell upon his attributes at great lengths, without getting saturated, so it would only be right to speak on the Charity event itself which was organized coincidentally on the 20th Annual day of the School.

SPB had been magnanimous and generous enough in reserving this date for this event, well in advance, wherein a sizeable donation was planned by the SPB FANS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION. This was the 4th charity event organized the Foundation this year, the earlier ones being for Coimbatore Seva Nilayam in Feb’08, Kalaiselvi Welfare Society at Chennai in Jun’08 (both presided over by the sweet SPB) and Freedom Foundation at Chennai in Oct’08.

The Donor Institution this time was identified by Mr.Seshadri, one of the highly active members of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation.

A team of Foundation Members headed by Mr.Giridhar Raja, the Managing Trustee arrived at the School at around 10.00am on the morning of 28th Dec 2008.

SPB arrived at 10.45am to the eager expectation of all those present at the venue. A grand stage had been set-up for the event which also coincided with the 20th Annual Day of the Institution.

Mr.Devarajan received the Guest of Honour warmly in his Cabin and went to great lengths in explaining about the activities of the School and introducing the great human force within the Institution which was selflessly keeping the wheels of the Institution rolling. The School was founded in the year 1989 and started off with three children.

SPB & team were then taken on a tour of the School which caters to around 150 deaf & dumb students. They were first taken to a Class where Mr.Devarajan & his staff explained through a demonstration on how the children were taught the language in the script form through interpretation of the lip movement. It was understood that method of teaching through signs had been introduced recently so that the barriers of language were overcome and a unified communication medium could exist across the section of these children.

The team was then shown a section where technical skills were imparted to the children in a combination of Tamil / English scripts. The children are being taught mechanical engineering subjects through learning of engineering drawings and workshop practices. It is understood that this Institution is the only one which is offering technical training to deaf & dumb student in this region. Speech therapy methodologies using equipments were also demonstrated.

The school has classes right from Std I to XI and vocational training classes like any other school for normal children. The visiting team was exposed to the teaching methods employed for the different Standards of Classes. SPB was all ears & eyes seeing the demo classes with utmost focus which showed that it was not a mere formality for him. He enjoyed & lauded the smartness of some of the children when they answered correctly and also cutely appreciated and understood the plight of some who struggled to get the answers right.

The School has a Science Lab equipped with physical balances, microscopes and telescopes. Tailoring classes are also being conducted for the girl students. The team also witnessed a tenth standard boy solving equations in the presence of SPB and receiving his applause ultimately for coming out with the right solution for the equations given.

Having completed the enlightening tour, the gathering which comprised of the Well wishers of the School, the parents of the children and the Foundation members, were treated royally to a stream of cultural events that seem to have been well planned for the occasion.

One could not but feel delighted listening to the cute recitation of Thirukkural by a student of the nursery classes, followed by an oratory on the pros & cons of employing science in life. One student came out with a recitation of her life ambitions. The cultural events included dancing to some popular Tamil songs and covered a wide range of dance types from traditional to modern. Two of his popular numbers formed a backdrop to dance sequences performed by the children. .A Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice” was refreshed before our eyes, which was nostalgic – the children performing admirably. One could savour the Tamil spoken by the Children in a Tamil play. The event had all the ingredients and went out to show the great effort of the Teaching staff and the children in making this a grand and successful event.

The ultimate highlight was that SPB was focused on the events right through, applauding the children in their performances. His parental care came to the fore when he called upon one of the organizers to set right the carpet on the stage which had got dislocated from its position and could have proved fatal to the dancing children on the stage.

The grand event culminated with honours to the guests who had graced the event. SPB was called upon to distribute mementos to all the 150 children and he did it untiringly with a smile. He signed off with a short and sweet speech wherein he lauded the efforts of Mr.Devarajan who selflessly had devoted his life to the cause of deaf & dumb children based on his own experience of being presented with a deaf & dumb son (it is understood that the Institution has been named after his son Jeevan). He also gave due credit to the members of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation who were behind the grand success of this event. He went on to honour them further by referring to them as his “BROTHERS” and not just fans. On insistence from Mr.Devarajan, he rightly honoured Mr.Seshadri & Mr.Ashok of the Foundation by presenting a shawl with an icing that it was the Foundation that rightly deserved it. On behalf of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation, he also handed over the donation to Mr.Devarajan.

It was indeed a memorable day for the Fans and Members of the SPB Fans charitable Foundation.

The SPB Fans Charitable Foundation expresses its thanks & gratitude to all the donors and well wishers who had made this event a successful one and the Foundation feels more confident in moving ahead and conducting many such charity events with more support from the members and the public.

Legendary playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam was the Chief Guest for a Charity Event that took place at the Jeevan Gnanodhaya School, an institution run for special children who do not possess the faculties of hearing and speech. The school is located in Chengelpet, 50 kilometers from Chennai.

The Charity Event was organized by The SPB Fans Charitable Foundation on the 28th of December 2008. SPB donated a lakh of rupees towards classroom furniture, utensils and other utilities.

The school was founded in the year 1989 and has 150 special children who do not have the capacity to hear and speak. The occasion marked the school's 20th Annual Day celebrations. Children of the school took part in cultural shows and the veteran singer thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it for three hours. Two of his popular songs served as backdrops for dance performances.

Jeevan Gnanodhaya School helps these special children overcome their inabilities in such a way that they can overcome their inabilities.

S. P. Balasubrahmanyam along with his foundation has proved that everyone should be socially responsible and Indiaglitz salutes the spirit of this legendary singer.
